Stevens is the butler for a wealthy but rustic English lord in the years leading up to World War II. Beholden always to his job and its stoic requirements, Stevens rejects every human impulse he has. He is the perfect servant. Stevens’ commitment is tested, however, by Miss Kenton, a new housekeeper who finds herself attracted to her superior. Lord Darlington, meanwhile, has begun to sympathize with the Nazi cause, a most contentious position, but one Stevens does not dare question.
