Heartland Film Festival Summer Rewind – June 26-28, 2014

Heartland Film Festival Summer Rewind showcases some of the best Heartland Film Festival movies of the past in an abbreviated, three-day mini-festival format, giving moviegoers an opportunity to see an enlightening slate of independent films and to meet the filmmakers who crafted them. Today we interview one of the attending filmmakers, Producer Jordan Bailey-Hoover. Her film, Hide Your Smiling Faces, took the $50,000 Grand Prize for Best Narrative Feature at the 2013 Heartland Film Festival.

Filmmaker Bio

Jordan Bailey-Hoover is a public policy advocate with a passion for film. Jordan produced the film Hide Your Smiling Faces (Berlinale, Tribeca), which was released theatrically by Tribeca Films. Jordan started in film by collaborating with her good friends at the Flies Collective and has worked with them on past projects including A Little Closer (Rotterdam). She hopes to continue working with them on upcoming projects.

In addition to her work in film, Jordan is also pursuing a career in public service. Currently, she is the Program Administrator at the NYU Leadership Initiative and is also a graduate student at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

Prior to joining the NYU Leadership Initiative, Jordan worked for NYU Abu Dhabi, both in New York and in Abu Dhabi. From 2010-2013, Jordan worked for NYU Abu Dhabi, including two years at the Center for Technology and Economic Development, a multidisciplinary research effort looking at how technology can solve problems facing the developing world. After graduating from the Gallatin School of Individualized Studies at NYU in 2007, Jordan worked for several years on a public advocacy campaign around issues of interrogation and torture at Human Rights First in New York. In 2010, Jordan moved to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where she worked for NYU Abu Dhabi. Jordan plans to continue exploring her dual interests in film and public service in the future.

Heartland Film Interview

Heartland Film: Can you tell us a little about your overall Heartland Film Festival experience and what you’re looking forward to most about returning to Indy?

Jordan Bailey-Hoover: The festival was a really amazing experience and I think that a huge part of that are the people. The audiences were great and very engaged. Getting the opportunity to meet and get to know the other filmmakers, as well as the amazing team behind the festival were the highlights of my time in Indianapolis. I’m also looking forward to exploring more of the city as well.

Heartland Film: What does it mean to you now months later to win the top prize at Heartland? How have you used/plan to use the prize money?

Jordan Bailey-Hoover: Winning the grand prize was huge for us. We had a very tight budget in making this film, so to be able to essentially be able to break even has been amazing. We can’t think Heartland enough for the prize that allowed us to do so.

Heartland Film: Give us an update on Hide Your Smiling Faces since it was shown at Heartland last October. Any big news?

Jordan Bailey-Hoover: Since Heartland, the film has played in dozens of festivals worldwide. The film was acquired by Tribeca Film for North American distribution and we had our theatrical release in New York this March. Since New York, the film has opened several other cities to date, with a couple more on the way.

Heartland Film: Heartland Film Festival moviegoers love filmmaker Q&As. Let’s say a Summer Rewind attendee wants to earn some brownie points—what is a question that you’d love to answer, but haven’t yet been asked?

Jordan Bailey-Hoover: This is a great question. We always get questions about the bear – which is great and fun to talk about. I think something we don’t get asked about is what the best part of making this film has been. To me, it’s been a great opportunity to collaborate with so many of my friends and I’ve really valued having them with us on every step of this journey.
