Internship Opportunities

About the Program

Our interns will serve a crucial role in putting on the Heartland International Film Festival (Oct. 10-20, 2019) as well as our year-round Heartland Film Roadshow events. At Heartland Film, we offer a fun and informative work environment where students can gain valuable experience within the nonprofit and entertainment industries. During the Film Festivals, students will be able to network with filmmakers and industry professionals from all over the world.

Our internship positions are ideal for students currently enrolled at an accredited college/university who are looking to obtain school credit. Some positions are also available as unpaid internships. Our summer internships will run from early May – early August; our fall internships will run from early August – early November (with some exceptions depending on the position). Interns are expected to work a schedule of 12-20 hours per week with the potential to work more hours during the Film Festivals.

Open Internship Positions

Spring/Summer Film Programming Internship (up to 6 positions available)

The Film Programming Interns are responsible for assisting the Film Programming Department with film submissions for the Indy Shorts International Film Festival (July 21-26, 2020) and the Heartland International Film Festival (October 8-18, 2020). This position will primarily assist the Senior Programmer and Artistic Director with screening/reviewing films, festival program scheduling, and research/data entry.

Interns are expected to work a schedule of 12-20 hours per week (between Monday-Friday, our office is open 9 AM-5 PM) from late February/early March through early August with the potential to work more hours during the 2020 Indy Shorts International Film Festival (July 21-26, 2019). Interns have the option of working remotely until the Spring semester ends, though interns must be able to work onsite in the Heartland Film office in downtown Indianapolis during the Summer.

Positions available:

  • Shorts Programming Intern (up to 2 positions)
  • Narrative Features Intern (up to 2 positions)
  • Documentary Features Intern (up to 2 positions)

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching films and maintaining spreadsheets
  • Processing film submissions and other data entry
  • Participating in the programming selection process
  • Pre-screening submitted films
  • Assisting with Volunteer Screening Committees
  • Assist with content gathering and proofreading/editing for the 2020 Indy Shorts and Heartland International Film Festival guide books
  • During the festival: assist across departments based on festival needs and intern interests
  • Opportunity to host film intros/Q&A’s with filmmakers during the festival

Qualifications: 

  • Passion for independent/international cinema and film festival culture
  • Critical eye for high-quality films that align with Heartland Film’s mission
  • Undergraduate student, Graduate Student, or recent graduate (within 1 year) focused on Film/Media Studies, Film Production, Liberal Arts, or a related field.
  • Detail-oriented with ability to multitask; excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and to take initiative
  • Basic research skills
  • Excellent proofreading/editing skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Drive; ability to quickly learn new software
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills; friendly customer service
  • Good stage presence (if hosting intros/Q&A’s)
  • Understanding of how this internship will help develop skills for one’s own educational or career goals.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is desirable, but not required
