Heartland International Film Festival and Indy Shorts International Film Festival Open 2019 Call for Entries

Set to bestow a total of $90,000 in cash prizes across both the Heartland International Film Festival (Oct. 10-20, 2019) and the Indy Shorts International Film Festival (July 25-28, 2019), Heartland Film opens 2019 call for entries. All eligible Indiana Spotlight filmmakers can submit for free now through the earlybird deadline and after that fees are half that of the standard submission prices!

The Heartland International Film Festival invites feature-length (41 minutes+) narrative, documentary, and animated films to officially submit for programming consideration, now through early-July at FilmFreeway.com and Withoutabox.com.

Indy Shorts International Film Festival is an Academy Award®-qualifying film festival in both the Live Action and Documentary short film categories, solely focused on the art of shorts films, 40 minutes or shorter in length. Indy Shorts will be hosted at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. The winners of Indy Shorts will earn the right to encore screenings at the feature-focused Heartland International Film Festival in October. Short films can be submitted for consideration to Indy Shorts now through early-May exclusively via a separate FilmFreeway submissions page.

HIFF Awards and Cash Prizes

Heartland International Film Festival presents a variety of awards to selected filmmakers. Winners of the 2019 Awards will be announced at the GLOW: Awards Party in October. The prizes are set to include:

Five Narrative Features will be selected as Heartland International Film Festival Finalists, announced prior to the Festival. One of the five Finalists will receive the $15,000 Grand Prize for Best Narrative Feature, and will be announced at GLOW: Awards Party during the Festival, with the four non-winners receiving $1,000 each.

Five Documentary Features will be selected as Heartland International Film Festival Finalists, announced prior to the Festival. One of the five Finalists will receive the $15,000 Grand Prize for Best Documentary Feature, and will be announced at GLOW: Awards Party during the Festival, with the four non-winners receiving $1,000 each.

The Jimmy Stewart Legacy Award will include a $5,000 cash prize for a single winner. The winning film will best embody the ongoing legacy of actor and national hero Jimmy Stewart and will demonstrate the triumph of the human spirit through determination and the defiance of odds, humble vulnerability, and courage in the face of adversity. Finalist and Official Selection titles are eligible.

U.S. or World Premiere Awards will be selected from Finalist and Official Selection titles with their premieres at the 2019 Heartland International Film Festival with two awards: Best Narrative Feature Premiere with a cash award of $2,000 and Best Documentary Feature Premiere with a cash award of $2,000.

Richard D. Propes Social Impact Awards will honor films (Finalists or Official Selections) that showcase stories centered on the fight for equality and justice. Two awards will be given: Social Impact Award, Narrative Feature, and Social Impact Award, Documentary Feature, each with a cash award of $2,000.

Humor & Humanity Award will honor one film (Finalist or Official Selection) that best tastefully combines comedy and pathos to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash award.

Indiana Spotlight Award will honor one film from any category that qualifies within the Indiana Spotlight competition. The winner will receive a $2,000 cash award.

Audience Choice Awards will award one film (Finalist or Official Selection) in the Narrative, Documentary, Special Presentation and Indiana Spotlight categories to each receive a $1,000 cash award.

Indy Shorts Awards and Cash Prizes

The second annual Indy Shorts event will bestow $30,000 in cash prizes across multiple categories, including:

Five Narrative Shorts will be selected as Indy Shorts Finalists, announced prior to the Festival. An Academy Award®-qualified category, one of the five Finalists will receive the $5,000 Grand Prize for Best Narrative Short with the four non-winners receiving $500 each.

Five Documentary Shorts will be selected as Indy Shorts Finalists, announced prior to the Festival. An Academy Award®-qualified category, one of the five Finalists will receive the $5,000 Grand Prize for Best Documentary Short with the four non-winners receiving $500 each.

Five Animated Shorts will be selected as Indy Shorts Finalists, announced prior to the Festival. One of the five Finalists will receive the $5,000 Grand Prize for Best Documentary Short with the four non-winners receiving $500 each.

High School Film Competition will award four category winners $500 each and the grand prize winner $2,000.

Indiana Spotlight Award will honor one film from any category that qualifies within the Indiana Spotlight competition. The winner will receive a $2,000 cash award.

Best Student Film Award will award one student film with a $1,000 cash award.

Audience Choice Awards will award one short film (Finalist or Official Selection) in the Narrative, Documentary, Animated and Indiana Spotlight categories to each receive a $500 cash award.

Interested filmmakers can submit independent feature films (41 minutes or longer) now through the extended early-July deadline.
