Internship Opportunities

About the Program

Our interns will serve a crucial role in putting on the 2019 Indy Shorts International Film Festival (July 25-28, 2019), the Heartland International Film Festival (Oct. 10-20, 2019) as well as our year-round Heartland Film Roadshow events. At Heartland Film, we offer a fun and informative work environment where students can gain valuable experience within the nonprofit and entertainment industries. During the Film Festivals students will be able to network with filmmakers and industry professionals from all over the world.

Our internship positions are ideal for students currently enrolled at an accredited college/university who are looking to obtain school credit. Some positions are also available as unpaid internships. Our summer internships will run from early May – early August; our fall internships will run from early August – early November (with some exceptions depending on the position). Interns are expected to work a schedule of 12-20 hours per week with the potential to work more hours during the Film Festivals.

Open Positions

Film Programming Intern
8 Spring/Summer Positions Available · 12-20 hours per week · Unpaid or College Credit
Application Deadline: January 31, 2019

The Film Programming Interns are responsible for assisting the Film Programming Team with film submissions for the Indy Shorts International Film Festival (July 25-28, 2019) and the Heartland International Film Festival (October 10-20, 2019). This position will primarily assist the Film Programming Coordinator with screening/reviewing films, print traffic, and research.

The position will start as soon as possible and interns have the option of working remotely until the Spring semester ends, though interns must be able to work onsite in the Heartland Film office in downtown Indianapolis during the Summer. Interns are expected to work a schedule of 12-20 hours per week with the potential to work more hours during the 2019 Indy Shorts International Film Festival (July 25-28, 2019).

Skills/Requirements:

  • Majoring in film, media studies, communication, visual arts or related field
  • Critical eye for high-quality films that align with Heartland Film’s mission to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film
  • Detail-oriented with effective time management skills
  • Strong communication skills and friendly customer service
  • Desire to learn more about what it takes to put on a film festival
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Drive; ability to learn new software
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is desirable, but not required

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as a second-tier film screener aiding the film selection process
  • Assist the Film Programming Coordinator and Marketing Manager in content gathering for the 2019 Indy Shorts and Heartland International Film Festival guide books
  • Assist the Film Programming Coordinator in collecting film research and print traffic for the 2019 Indy Shorts and Heartland Int’l Film Festival

Social Media Anchor Intern
1 Summer Position Available · 12-20 hours per week · Unpaid or College Credit · May – early August

The Social Media Anchor Intern is responsible for assisting the Marketing Team by promoting the Heartland Film brand across multiple platforms. This position will primarily assist the Marketing Manager with managing Heartland Film’s social media accounts, blogging, writing/editing press releases, coordinating media credentials and implementing various marketing strategies. In addition, the Social Media Anchor Intern will be conducting interviews with filmmakers on the red carpet using Heartland Film’s Facebook Live during Indy Shorts major events.

Skills/Requirements:

  • Majoring in marketing, communications, media studies, film, nonprofit management or related field
  • Detail-oriented with effective time management skills
  • Strong communication skills and copywriting/editing ability
  • Desire to learn more about marketing, social media management, public relations and what it takes to put on a film festival
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Drive
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is desirable, but not required
  • Experience with social media management for a nonprofit, business or organization is desirable, but not required

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Marketing Manager with social media content creation and scheduling for Heartland Film’s Facebook, Twitter & Instagram
  • Write and publish compelling posts on the Heartland Film blog
  • Assist the Marketing Manager with red carpet events, media contacts and community outreach initiatives
  • Assist the Marketing Manager with writing/editing copy for the Heartland Film email newsletter
  • Interview filmmakers and special guests on the red carpet via Heartland Film’s Facebook Live

Photography/Graphic Design Intern
1 Summer Position Available · 12-20 hours per week · Unpaid or College Credit · May – early August

The Photography/Graphic Design Intern is responsible for assisting the Marketing Team by promoting the Heartland Film brand using graphic design and photography. This position will primarily assist the Marketing Manager with creating content for Heartland Film’s social media accounts, designing flyers/collateral/slides for events, and creating video/photo content to promote the Heartland Film brand. In addition, this person will be present during Indy Shorts International Film Festival to photograph special events, red carpets and more.

Skills/Requirements:

  • Majoring in design, photography, visual arts, new media studies, communications or related field
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Adobe Bridge)
  • Detail-oriented with effective time management skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Desire to learn more about marketing, design, nonprofits and what it takes to put on a film festival
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Drive

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Marketing Manager in the creation of flyers, collateral and slides for Heartland Film events
  • Create interesting and high-quality content for Heartland Film’s website and social media accounts
  • Assist the Marketing Manager with Heartland Film Festival signage creation, badge credentials and image formatting for the guide book
  • Take photos during the Festival that promote the Heartland Film brand and the Indy Shorts Int’l Film Festival experience
