Heartland Film Festival Summer Rewind – June 26-28, 2014

Heartland Film Festival Summer Rewind showcases some of the best Heartland Film Festival movies of the past in an abbreviated, three-day mini-festival format, giving moviegoers an opportunity to see an enlightening slate of independent films and to meet the filmmakers who crafted them. Today we interview one of the attending filmmakers, Director/Writer Daniel Patrick Carbone. His film, Hide Your Smiling Faces, took the $50,000 Grand Prize for Best Narrative Feature at the 2013 Heartland Film Festival.

Heartland Film Interview

Heartland Film: You weren’t able to attend last year’s Heartland Film Festival when Hide Your Smiling Faces took the Festival’s top honor, so we’re extra excited to have you here at Summer Rewind. What have you heard about the Festival from Jordan Bailey-Hoover, and what are you looking forward to the most?

Daniel Patrick Carbone: I’m extra excited to be coming! Last fall was an incredibly busy time for the film so we were forced to adopt a “divide and conquer” approach to our festival travel. I was thrilled that Jordan was able to come and represent the film and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about her entire experience. While taking the top honor was of course both thrilling and humbling, being able to meet a whole new group of talented filmmakers and share Hide Your Smiling Faces with the film loving audiences of Indianapolis was just as exciting. What I am most looking forward to is the ability to finally properly thank everyone at the festival for the incredible amount of support they have provided to this film since last year.

Heartland Film: What have you done/plan to do with the grand prize money? Is it covering production costs, or going towards a new project?

Daniel Patrick Carbone: The grand prize money from Heartland changed everything. For a debut, low-budget, primarily self-funded film like ours, the chances of recouping our budget through traditional avenues is small. Incredibly generous festival prizes like this offer a much-needed alternative revenue source for low-budget “non-commercial” films. The entire art form is made more sustainable through support like this.

For Hide Your Smiling Faces, the prize money was used to cover the majority of the film’s production and post-production costs. As a first time feature filmmaker, I never expected to make money from this film, but always hoped that I could at least break even and not be in debt going into my next film. The grand prize from Heartland allowed that to happen and I could not be more grateful.

Heartland Film: Give us an update on Hide Your Smiling Faces since it was shown at Heartland last October. Any big news?

Daniel Patrick Carbone: Yes! Since Heartland, Hide Your Smiling Faces was named the Best Undistributed Film by the National Society of Film Critics and was picked up by Tribeca Film for a North-American theatrical and VOD release! The film opened commercially in multiple cities and is currently available on iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play, and On-Demand on all major cable providers. Later this year we open theatrically in the UK, Spain, and on television and VOD in a number of European and Asian territories.

Heartland Film: Heartland Film Festival moviegoers love filmmaker Q&As. Let’s say a Summer Rewind attendee wants to earn some brownie points—what is a question that you’d love to answer, but haven’t yet been asked?

Daniel Patrick Carbone: I’m a huge nerd, and while it doesn’t always make for the most interesting Q&A topic, I always love discussing the nitty-gritty technical details of filmmaking – sensors, codecs, resolutions, frame rates, etc. I always try to make Q&As both interesting and informative. I think they are a unique opportunity for film lovers and future filmmakers to learn about the process and hopefully get a new perspective. I also love helping film students troubleshoot problems on their own projects, or brainstorm ways to do things cheaply without sacrificing their vision. So if there are any young filmmakers in attendance, I hope they take speak up!
